What is the dental implant procedure and how long does recovery take?

The dental implant procedure takes place through several carefully planned stages—from diagnosis to full recovery. Learn what each step involves, how long the entire process takes, and what to expect during healing for a safe and long-lasting result.
The loss of one or more teeth can be most successfully and permanently resolved with the placement of a dental implant. However, it seems that the implant placement process is the most interesting part of the entire treatment for most people, for several reasons. First, patients want to know whether implant placement is painful and how long the entire process will take so they can prepare in advance for the level of discomfort they might expect. Another important aspect comes after the procedure itself, which is the recovery period following implant placement, as patients need to plan potential time off work and understand how many days of rest are required for successful healing. For this reason, we will explain the entire dental implant procedure in detail and provide useful advice on how to recover as quickly as possible after the surgery.

Dental Implants Rijeka: Dental Implant Placement Process

After you decide to proceed with dental implants, we begin with a consultation and initial examination. The goal of this step is to gain a clear understanding of your oral health and explain the entire treatment process in a transparent way. During this phase, we will define the full cost of the treatment to avoid any unexpected surprises and ensure you understand what you are paying for, as well as each step of the process from start to finish. After the initial examination and consultation, we will schedule the final date for the placement of dental implants.

First Visit for Dental Implant Placement

We begin by administering anesthesia to ensure the entire experience is completely painless. Once the anesthesia takes effect, we start placing the first part of the implant into the bone. The only discomfort you might notice is the sound of drilling—and that’s all. If possible, we will immediately place a temporary prosthetic solution on the newly inserted implants so that you can eat and chew normally. This is especially beneficial for patients who are receiving implants in visible areas such as the front teeth. As for the first visit, that’s it. The procedure typically takes around 30–45 minutes.

After placing the first part of the implant, we part ways for a period of time—specifically about 3 months if the implant is placed in the lower jaw and up to 6 months for the upper jaw, as the implants need time to rest in the bone and fully integrate with it. This healing period may be shorter or longer depending on the patient, as determined by your dentist. During this time, the implants are covered by the gum tissue and are not visible in the oral cavity.

It is important to note that in some patients it is possible to place healing abutments during the first visit, which reduces the number of required visits—especially convenient for our patients who travel from distant locations.

Second Visit for Dental Implant Placement

If healing abutments cannot be placed during the first visit, after 3 or 6 months we schedule another appointment. During this visit, we “uncover” the implants and remove the gum tissue above them in order to place the healing abutments. These abutments allow the soft tissue around them to heal and shape properly so that it will later aesthetically mimic the natural emergence of a tooth from the gum. The healing abutments remain in place for 15–20 days, after which they are removed.

Third Visit for Dental Implant Placement

During this visit, we remove the healing abutments and take an impression based on which we will create the final prosthetic solution, that is, the artificial tooth or teeth. The impression-taking process takes about 30 minutes.

Fourth Visit for Dental Implant Placement

After about a week, the laboratory will produce the final replacement tooth, which we will attach to the part of the implant that has fully integrated with the bone and gum tissue. This is also the final step in the dental implant procedure. The placement itself takes only 20–30 minutes, depending on whether one or multiple implants are being placed. After the procedure is completed, we will go through detailed instructions on how to maintain your implant and schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure everything is progressing as planned.

How long does recovery take after dental implant placement?

After completing the entire implant placement process, you are probably wondering how long it will take to get back to normal. It is very important to emphasize that recovery is a crucial part of the entire treatment, and you need to take it seriously and allow your body to fully heal so that the therapy itself is as successful as possible.

Recovery after the first visit and implant placement in the bone

The first step, in which the implant is placed into the bone, is also the most demanding for the patient. After the procedure, you can expect the following:

Pain

After the procedure and once the anesthesia wears off, most patients will begin to feel mild discomfort in the treated area. In most cases, there is no need to take painkillers, as the discomfort is minimal, but if the pain is stronger, we recommend taking a pain relief tablet. It is very likely that by the second day after the procedure, the pain will decrease and there will be no need for further medication.

Swelling

Swelling will be present during the first two days after the procedure and should gradually decrease afterward. We recommend applying cold compresses to the face immediately after the procedure and continuing as needed over the following days. The extent of swelling will depend on the size of the procedure and how consistently you apply cold compresses.

Bleeding

Mild bleeding may be present for several hours after the procedure.

What should you avoid during the first 7–14 days after dental implant placement?

The first few days after surgery are crucial for your body to fully recover. Keep in mind that, although this is a routine procedure, your body needs time to adjust. During the first few days after implant placement, we recommend that you:

Avoid physical exertion

We know some of you may want to return to the gym, go running, or play sports on the same day, but in this case, we recommend taking a short break. For the first 2–3 days after implant placement, avoid strenuous activities such as running or weightlifting. Light activities like yoga, walking, and gentle stretching are generally fine, but you should wait at least a week before resuming more intense exercise.

Avoid consuming hot food and drinks

In addition to potentially burning the tissue, hot food and drinks can irritate the gums and lead to excessive bleeding.

Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods

For a few days after implant placement, we do not recommend eating foods such as roasted pork with crispy skin, nuts, or sticky foods like gummy candies or white bread. This type of food can irritate the gums and cause excessive bleeding. Our advice is to stick to a softer or liquid-based diet, at least for the first week.

Do not smoke

We understand that regular smokers may find this advice difficult, but you should be aware that smoking disrupts the normal healing process and increases the risk of implant complications and infection. If you are a smoker, try to refrain from smoking for at least 48 hours after the procedure.

Avoid alcohol

During the first 24 hours, we do not recommend consuming alcoholic beverages. Alcohol can slow down the healing process and interfere with the effectiveness of antibiotics and medications prescribed by your dentist.

Be careful when brushing

We recommend that for the first few days you avoid brushing the area where the procedure was performed, while still thoroughly cleaning the rest of your teeth. If your dentist has advised it, you may also use a mouthwash for a certain period.
