Teeth air polishing, as you probably already know, is a procedure for removing unwanted deposits from the surface of the teeth. In addition to plaque, it can also very effectively remove unwanted discoloration.

Although this procedure is called “sandblasting,” it has nothing to do with sand. What teeth air polishing is, how it is performed, and what to expect after the procedure—read in our new blog.

What is teeth air polishing?

A standard dental procedure used to remove plaque and pigmentation from the tooth surface. Sodium bicarbonate (calcium carbonate) is most commonly used as the air polishing powder, as it is abrasive enough to remove deposits while still gentle enough not to damage the enamel. In addition to plaque, air polishing can very effectively remove unwanted discoloration (stains on teeth caused by smoking, coffee, red wine, or dark fruit juices).

How long does it take?

Teeth air polishing is a quick and painless procedure often recommended to patients during routine oral check-ups. On average, it takes approximately 15–30 minutes. The procedure usually does not cause side effects, although some patients may experience temporary tooth sensitivity.

What after the procedure?

The longevity of the results largely depends on the patient’s care. With regular daily oral hygiene, including brushing your teeth in the morning and evening and using interdental brushes, the results can be maintained for a long time.

Air polishing restores the natural whiteness of the teeth and deeply cleans them. It is recommended to undergo air polishing once a year. Some patients are more prone to the buildup of tartar and, for preventive reasons, it should be removed every three months. For others, even three years may pass between cleanings and air polishing, with minimal tartar buildup.

What matters most are regular check-ups, during which it can be easily determined how often air polishing is needed.
